Prosecuting Attorney
The Prosecuting Attorney's Office prosecutes criminal matters occurring within Pend Oreille County, serves as legal adviser to the County Commissioners and other elected officials, represents the County in civil cases, enforces child-support orders, and serves as ex-officio corner. The Prosecuting Attorney's Office is headed by Thomas A. Metzger, the elected Prosecuting Attorney for Pend Oreille County, and is staffed by four Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys, five support staff, and one investigator.

Criminal Prosecution
The Prosecuting Attorney's Office prosecutes all felony and misdemeanor crimes committed by adults and juveniles within the County, except for misdemeanor crimes committed within the city limits of Newport. The Prosecuting Attorney's Office provides legal advice and support to the Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies within the County to assist them in the investigation of alleged criminal activity. The attorneys of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office represent the County and the State of Washington at all phases of the criminal litigation process from initial appearances, plea negotiations, pretrial hearings, trials, sentencing hearings, and appeals.
Civil
The Prosecuting Attorney serves as legal counsel for Pend Oreille County elected officials, department heads, and County agencies by providing legal advice and representing the County in lawsuits.The Prosecuting Attorney's Office does not give legal advice to the public on matters which private attorneys handle, for example, divorce, landlord/tenant issues, property boundary disputes, contracts, etc.
Child Support Enforcement
The Prosecuting Attorney's Office, under contract with the State of Washington, takes judicial action to establish paternity, to set or modify child support, and to enforce child-support orders against non-paying parents.
Coroner
As County Coroner, the Prosecuting Attorney is responsible for investigating and certifying the cause of death in those cases where death is sudden, unexpected, or the result of an accident or unlawful means. In carrying out this responsibility the Prosecutor/Coroner coordinates with law enforcement and medical professionals, including the regional medical examiner.
