Inmate Incoming Mail
Material that is legal to mail through the U.S. Postal Service is received. There is no mail delivery to the Jail on weekends or holidays. Incoming mail is distributed within 24 hours of receipt directly to the person addressed. There are no limits on the amount of mail the inmate may receive, however, they are not allowed to keep more than a limited amount of mail in the cell.
Except legal mail, all incoming mail is opened and inspected for money and contraband, and may be scanned for content. Legal mail may be opened in front of the inmate to check for contraband. Incoming mail with no sender return address may be put in the inmate’s property. Pornography, sexually suggestive, and nude photographs are not allowed in the cells. These items are returned to the sender or placed in the inmate’s property storage locker when received.
U.S. fund and authorized money orders are receipted and deposited into the inmate’s account. Checks, non-authorized money orders, and foreign currency is receipted and stored in the inmate’s property storage.
Mail that contains any of the following will be rejected:
- Care package
- Flowers or candy
- Mail written in crayon
- Mail written in gel-type in
- Raised decorative crafts or sticker
- Mail with lipstick imprinted on it
- Items containing glue, glue spots, or white out
- Stationary, blank paper, envelopes, Post-It Note
- Any type of craft material including but not limited to plastic, glitter, tape, craft materials, black paper, staples, paperclips, ribbon
- Mail containing more than 5 individual photos per letter regardless of how the photos are printed. The photos may not contain nudity, violent acts, and/or gang related activities
- Oder-causing substances such as perfume or cologne that permeate the mail
- Polaroid’s
- Marking pen
- Felt-tip pen
- Phone card
- Postage stamp
- Books or magazines sent from a private party
- Sticker or labels
- Stick-on return address labels
Mail Order Books and Magazines
All books, magazines, and periodicals must be prepaid and delivered to the facility by the United Stated Postal Service or a delivery company such as Fed-Ex or UPS. The publication must be mailed directly from the publisher or originate from a verifiable and reputable internet/mail order company or bookstore via the internet or mail order facility.
Books and Magazines not allowed in the facility:
- Hardbound or leather-bound books
- Obscene or sexually oriented publications or writings (including magazines such as Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, etc.)
- Any matter of character tending to incite murder, arson, riot, racism, or any other form of violence (including anything which may adversely affect jail security due to gang-type theme or pictures depicting gang activity).
- Any other matter concerning unlawful gambling or an unlawful lottery.
- Any publication which could be considered a threat to the safety or security of the facility.
Inmate Outgoing Mail
No limit is set for the amount of mail the inmate may send from the facility (at their own expense). Authorized mail is scanned by corrections staff and is confiscated if the content is determined to be a security concern.
Inmate-to-Inmate Mail
Inmate to inmate mail is not allowed or accepted via the U.S. Postal Service. This includes mail to and from other Federal, State, Local, and Juvenile institutions. This also includes individuals in court ordered treatment programs. All such mail, out-going or in-coming will be returned to the sender after examination.
